Do I Really Need To Use Premium Gas?

BMW, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover, Mini, and nearly every other European car manufacturer recommends using premium fuel in their vehicles. But do we REALLY need to spend the extra 20 cents a gallon to jump from 87 to 91 octane? In short, YES!
Consider this, in Europe 91 octane is the lowest grade of fuel that you can buy. This means that the European car manufacturers are designing the cars to run 91 as a MINIMUM. When we put 87 octane in our often turbo-charged vehicles, it contributes to less power, lower fuel economy and carbon buildup. What does that mean for you, the owner of the vehicle? More $$$ spent on future repairs as well as money lost from reduced fuel economy.
As mechanics, we don’t mind what you run in your vehicle as we get paid to fix it. As a fellow driver and someone who cares about your experience owning your vehicle, I highly recommend spending the extra few dollars today to avoid spending the extra few hundred or thousand dollars down the line. Food for thought!
